Over the last 10 years, national and international companies have taken over many local and regional bakeries. Not us, Cellone’s Bread Co. remains family owned and operated in Southwestern Pennsylvania.

So, what are the benefits of buying local? Many of us do it, and we’ve heard that it helps our communities but what does it actually mean?

When you buy local, your money stays local, and it strengthens the local economy and community in significant ways.

Buying local creates jobs within the community; therefore, employment levels are more likely to be stable, keeping money circulating within the local economy. Dollars spent locally are re-spent locally, contributing to paying more salaries and increasing the tax base. That is three times more money into your community than if you had purchased from a national bread company.

Local businesses contribute more to local charities and fundraisers than do national businesses (think community sports team sponsors). That’s because local businesses are owned by people who live and remain in the community and care about the people in the community and their future.

Local production also has benefits to efficiency, better quality control by creating a close relationship between producer and buyer, and the ability to scale production to the buyer’s needs decreases waste. Local distribution saves energy and ensures fresh delivery.

Cellone’s employs 165 employees all of which live in the tristate area. We support many local community sports and fundraising programs including supplying bread for many spaghetti dinners to help raise money for local families in need. Our delivery drivers are on the road early in the morning delivering fresh bread throughout the Pittsburgh area.
